Cut is not the shape of the diamond as many people can be confused of. Shape is the general physical appearance of the diamond, whether it is round shaped, pear shaped, or emerald shaped. Cut is actually what gives the diamond its brilliance, sparkle, or luster. For a diamond to truly show its brilliance, the cut, which creates the angle and the finish, has to be perfect. A diamond with poor luster means it has been poorly cut.

How do you know if a diamond has been poorly cut aside from lacking in luster or shine? The science is in how the diamond reflects light. If light enters the diamond through its table and then reaches its facets, the light should be reflected back into the viewer’s eye which makes the diamond appear brilliant or shiny. However, if the light rays seep out or is “absorbed” by the diamond, then the diamond is poorly cut. In other words, the more light reflected to the eyes, the more brilliant the diamond is, which also means that the diamond has been skillfully cut.

To maximize a diamond’s brilliance, cut has to be made by applying formulae that result to good proportions. The thing is, proportions can vary and these can determine whether a diamond has an ideal cut or a poor cut. Ideal and poor cuts are some of the grading methods used to help the buying public determine diamonds’ cuts and quality. Other cut grades include premium, very good, and good. The highest grade is ideal cut and the lowest grade is, of course, the fair or poor cut.

The ideal cut’s intention is to maximize the sparkle or brilliance that a diamond can exude. And since it gives the diamond the most sparkle, diamonds with this cut cost a lot. This cut is only applicable for round shaped diamonds.

Premium cut, like the ideal cut, also intends to give diamond maximum brilliance, but costs of premium cut diamonds are slightly lower than the ideal cut ones.

Diamonds with very good cuts can reflect most light that strike them, thus creating good sparkle. Diamonds with very good cuts are usually big. This means that cutters intentionally stray away from ideal proportions to retain the largeness of the diamond. Prices of very good cut diamonds are slightly lower than the premium cut ones.

Good cut diamonds reflect a great amount of light that strike their surface. Again, cutters veer away from preferred proportions to retain the large size of the diamond instead of cutting away to achieve more brilliance.

Fair or poor cut diamonds reflect only a small amount of light that strike them. Most poorly cut diamonds have maximum carat weight over the other grades of diamond cuts.

Determining the cut would help you in choosing the diamond of your preference, whether you would want a smaller but more sparkly diamond, or a bigger but less sparkly diamond.
